LHS Alumni enjoy Water Polo Success

January 9, 2012 by Mr. Erik Healy   Comments (0)

It makes me so proud to announce that Loyola had five athletes represent the 2011 NCAA National Championship Water Polo team from USC. This team is the first in NCAA Water Polo History to win four consectutive titles. I am fortunate enough to have coached all of these athletes in the last eight years here at Loyola, and as a graduate of USC it makes me especially happy to see them succeeding at my alma mater.

Forest Monroe (’08) won his fourth National Championship in 4 years. He redshirted his first year so Forest still has eligibility for one more season.

  • Nikola Vavic (’10) won his second consecutive National Championship at USC and was also awarded All-American status
  • Jack Plaga (’10) won his second consecutive National Championship, first as an active player on the roster
  • Max Hurst-Mendoza (’10) won his second consecutive National Championship, although he did redshirt this year
  • Matthew Schwartz (’11) won his first National Championship in his first year at USC

The water polo program has a variety of players playing NCAA Water Polo, including:

  • Jimmy Moore (’08) Santa Clara
  • Kyle Nadel (’10) Santa Clara
  • Clayton Evans (’11) Stanford
  • Alex Fortis (‘11) UCLA
  • Matt Newby (’11) NAVY

The 2012 seniors have already made some decisions for next year, and have announced that they will play Water Polo as well.

  • Evan Chang (’12) Undecided
  • Andy Gonzalez (’12) Undecided
  • Jamie Kuprenas (’12) Princeton
  • Troy Nadel (’12) Santa Clara
  • Trenton Ross (’12) UCLA
